Understanding Iron in Ontario Water

Iron is one of the most common water quality problems in Ontario, particularly in areas drawing from groundwater sources. It appears in several forms that require different treatment approaches — which is why a proper water test is critical before selecting a system.

Types of Iron in Ontario Water

  • Ferrous (clear-water) iron: Dissolved iron that's invisible when water runs but turns orange when exposed to air. Most common in well water.
  • Ferric (red-water) iron: Already oxidized iron that appears as rust particles visible in the water. Filtered with sediment pre-filters.
  • Bacterial iron (iron bacteria): Iron-metabolizing bacteria that produce slime in toilet tanks and plumbing. Requires oxidation + disinfection treatment.
  • Organic iron (iron-tannin complex): Iron bound to tannins (organic matter) that appears yellow-brown. Requires specialized treatment — not removed by standard iron filters.

Injects air into the water stream to oxidize dissolved (ferrous) iron into filterable particles, then captures them in a media bed. Highly effective for iron up to 10-15 mg/L. Greensand / Birm Filter

Manganese greensand and Birm media are catalytic media that oxidize and filter both iron and manganese simultaneously. Ideal when manganese is present alongside iron (common in York Region and Simcoe County wells). May require periodic potassium permanganate regeneration.
