Well Water Treatment Systems for Ontario Homes

Private well water in Ontario presents unique challenges — iron, bacteria, hardness, sulphur, and more. We test your well water comprehensively and design a custom treatment system to solve every problem specific to your property.

Ontario Well Water Is Not Like Municipal Water

Municipal water goes through extensive treatment before it reaches your tap. Well water receives zero treatment — whatever is in your groundwater comes directly into your home. In Ontario's geological environment, that means a wide range of potential contaminants that vary by property and region.

Common Ontario Well Water Problems

  • Iron: Orange/brown staining on fixtures, laundry, and dishes. Metallic taste. Very common in York Region, Simcoe County, and rural Hamilton/Halton areas.
  • Manganese: Black staining and sediment. Associated with neurological concerns at elevated levels. Often appears alongside iron.
  • Bacteria & E. coli: Agricultural runoff, flooding, and aging well casings introduce coliform bacteria and E. coli into private wells. Annual testing required by Ontario regulation.
  • Hydrogen Sulphide: The rotten egg smell. Common in wells drawing from sulphur-rich geological formations.
  • Hardness: Most Ontario bedrock aquifers produce very hard water — often 15-25+ GPG depending on the area.
  • Nitrates: Agricultural areas face nitrate contamination from fertilizer runoff. Dangerous for infants under 6 months (blue baby syndrome).
  • Arsenic: Naturally occurring in certain Ontario geological formations, particularly in the Canadian Shield adjacent areas.
  • Tannins: Yellow/brown-coloured water with an earthy taste. Common in shallow wells or areas with high organic matter in soil.

Ontario Regulation 903 (Wells) requires private well owners to test their water at least once a year for bacteria. We recommend testing for a full panel of contaminants every 2-3 years, or after any flooding event, construction near your well, or change in taste/odour/colour.

Well Water Treatment Solutions

Iron & Manganese Removal

Oxidizing iron filters remove ferrous (dissolved) and ferric (particulate) iron and manganese. Air injection, birm, or greensand media selected based on your specific iron levels and water chemistry. Eliminates orange staining and metallic taste permanently.

UV Bacterial Disinfection

UV ultraviolet systems installed at the point of entry eliminate 99.9%+ of bacteria, E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium without chemicals. Annual lamp replacement. The essential minimum for any private well used for drinking water in Ontario.

Water Softening

Ontario well water is typically harder than municipal supply. Ion exchange softeners remove calcium and magnesium, eliminating scale buildup on pipes and appliances. Often paired with iron removal for comprehensive mineral treatment.

Sediment Filtration

Multi-stage sediment pre-filters protect downstream equipment and remove particulate matter, sand, and turbidity. Essential first stage in any well water treatment system. 5-micron to 50-micron options depending on sediment load.

Sulphur & Odour Removal

Hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) is removed through oxidizing filtration, aeration, or catalytic carbon media depending on concentration. Eliminates the odour permanently without chemicals or ongoing consumables.

Reverse Osmosis (Drinking)

For well water with nitrates, arsenic, or other dissolved contaminants that whole-home systems can't address, an RO system at the kitchen tap provides an extra layer of protection for drinking and cooking water. Removes 95%+ of all dissolved contaminants.
