Every year, GTA municipalities publish detailed water quality reports showing what's in your tap water. But most homeowners never read them — they're technical, dense, and hard to interpret. We've done the work for you, analyzing the 2024-2025 reports for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and surrounding municipalities to give you the clear picture.
Important: "Meets standards" does not mean "perfect." Ontario's drinking water standards set maximum allowable contaminant levels -- not optimal health levels. Many contaminants appear in GTA water at concentrations below legal limits but above levels that health-conscious families prefer.
Toronto Water Quality 2025
Toronto Water serves approximately 3.7 million people through three treatment plants. The 2024 Annual Report reveals:
- Hardness: 124-168 mg/L (7-10 GPG) -- consistently hard throughout the city
- Disinfectant: Chloramines (combination of chlorine and ammonia) used throughout the distribution system. Chloramine residuals measured at 0.5-2.1 mg/L at various sampling points.
- Lead: While treatment plant water contains no lead, Toronto's aging infrastructure includes approximately 60,000 lead service pipes in pre-1955 homes. Lead can leach into water between the main and your tap.
- Trihalomethanes (THMs): Formed as byproducts of chlorination. Toronto's average: 21 mcg/L (Ontario maximum: 100 mcg/L). Within limits, but present.
- Haloacetic acids (HAAs): Another chlorination byproduct averaging 14 mcg/L in Toronto samples.
- Microplastics: Not yet regulated but detected in Lake Ontario source water. Toronto Water does not test for microplastics in the distribution system.
Mississauga and Brampton (Peel Region) 2025
Peel Region serves Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon from three Lake Ontario water treatment plants:
- Hardness: 170-245 mg/L (10-14 GPG) -- consistently very hard
- Disinfectant: Chloramines throughout the distribution system
- Nitrates: Generally low (under 2 mg/L) in Peel Region municipal water
- Sodium: Naturally occurring sodium from Lake Ontario averages 35-45 mg/L in Peel Region water -- relatively high compared to other Ontario regions
- THMs: Annual average of 25 mcg/L in Peel Region samples (well within limits)
York Region (Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket) 2025
- Water sources: Mix of Lake Ontario (Lake Simcoe Treatment Plant) and Lake Simcoe sources
- Hardness: 135-200 mg/L (8-12 GPG)
- Disinfectant: Chloramines throughout York Region
- Iron: Some areas of York Region, particularly those relying on older distribution infrastructure, can see elevated iron levels, especially after main breaks or pressure changes
- Lake Simcoe water quality: The lake receives agricultural and urban runoff affecting nitrate and phosphorus levels in source water, though treatment removes most concerns
Halton Region (Oakville, Burlington) 2025
- Hardness: 205-275 mg/L (12-16 GPG) -- among the hardest municipal water in Ontario
- Treatment: Halton Region uses both chlorine and chloramine treatment depending on the area
- Sodium: Relatively low compared to other GTA regions
- THMs: Average 18 mcg/L -- lower than Toronto and Peel due to different treatment protocols
Durham Region (Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering) 2025
- Hardness: 130-205 mg/L (8-12 GPG)
- Treatment: Primarily chlorine disinfection (less chloramine use than Toronto/Peel)
- Iron: Generally low in municipal supply; higher in some private well areas
- Seasonal variation: Durham Region water quality can vary seasonally, particularly in summer when Lake Ontario has increased algae activity near intake points
What This Means for GTA Homeowners
Reading between the lines of these official reports, here's what concerned GTA homeowners should know:
The Lead Problem is Real in Toronto
Toronto's aging infrastructure means that even though the treatment plant water is lead-free, thousands of homes still have lead service pipes. The only guaranteed way to protect your family is a reverse osmosis system at the point of use -- confirmed to remove 95%+ of lead.
Chloramines Are Different From Chlorine
Most GTA municipalities have switched from chlorine to chloramine treatment. Chloramines are harder to remove -- they don't evaporate like chlorine and require catalytic carbon media, not standard carbon filters, to remove effectively.
Hardness is Universally High
Every GTA municipality has water classified as at least "hard" by international standards. A water softener is a worthwhile investment for any GTA home -- the scale prevention and appliance savings alone provide excellent return on investment.
Emerging Contaminants Are Present
Microplastics, pharmaceutical compounds, and PFAS chemicals are detected in Lake Ontario but are not currently regulated in Ontario drinking water standards. This doesn't mean they're harmless -- it means the science and regulation are still catching up. A reverse osmosis system provides protection against all of these.
Our Recommendations by GTA Region
- Toronto (esp. pre-1955 homes): RO system for drinking + whole-home carbon filter for chloramine removal + softener for hardness
- Mississauga/Brampton: Water softener essential (10-14 GPG) + RO for drinking
- Oakville/Burlington: Water softener critical (12-16 GPG) + RO for drinking
- York Region (Markham, Vaughan, etc.): Water softener + RO system recommended
- Durham Region: Water softener + carbon filtration + RO if concerned about chlorination
